Because your home’s roof isn’t in your line of sight, you may not give it much consideration. However, when you notice a leak or other problem, chances are you begin paying attention. Just like anything else in and around your home, your roof needs the occasional checkup to continue doing its job – which is to protect your home and everything inside. Unfortunately, many homeowners don’t realize there’s a problem until the damage is done.
The good news is, there are a few tell-tale signs of a water problem with your roof, which can be found here.
-
Issues with the Flashing
Have you inspected the flashing on your roof recently? Flashing is found around your chimney, the vent pipe and roof. If it’s not in good condition, or if there is any damage present, it could lead to water seepage and expensive damage.
If you have a flat roof, you should understand that issues with the flashing is the number one cause of leaks. Remain mindful and aware of this to prevent problems.
-
Missing Shingles
When you look at the surface of your roof, have you noticed some bare areas where shingles used to be? Shingles can fly away in the wind, become loose during storms and just fall off as they age. Regardless of why the shingles are missing, these bare spots represent serious issues and the possibility of a leak.
Another sign of an issue with your shingles is if they have begun to curl at the edges. This may indicate an area that’s already suffered water damage.

Obvious Sings of an Old or Aging Roof
Much like anything else, your roof has a shelf-life. That’s simply a fact. If you believe it’s been a while since your home’s roof was replaced, then it may be time to call for an inspection and entertain the idea of replacing it. The good news is, an old roof isn’t going to be too difficult to notice.
-
Gutter Granules
This isn’t what it sounds like. Gutters don’t produce granules, but the shingles on your roof are covered din them. While it’s completely normal for your shingles to lose some granules, if you discover your gutters are clogged or covered – this indicates a problem. If all the granules are missing, this is going to make your roof more prone to developing a leak or weak spot.
While small areas can be repaired, if the issue covers a larger part of your roof, it may require replacement.

Leaking Roof Beams
You will have to venture into your attic to find out if this is an issue. Take a flashlight with you and see if you notice any sunlight through your roof’s beams. If you do, it means that water is likely already getting inside. Call a roofer right away!
Any time you suspect issues, wear or leak problems with your roof, it’s best to call a professional for an inspection. They can evaluate the problem and make the necessary repairs to halt the damage.
